Can you believe I’ve had a pair of socks in the WIPs pile for almost 2 years? 2 YEARS! I don’t think I’ve ever had a sock WIP for that long. I knit knee-length socks in 3 months! Shame on me. I don’t have an FO pic of them yet as I’m saving them to wear tonight to a friend’s birthday dinner. I must remember to get a shot of them while there. In the meantime I have some in-progress shots of me finishing the heels and the ‘new’ tool I used to get them started:

Trusty Seamripper

I’ve always been a little nervous about cutting open the contrasting yarn seam on afterthought socks. In fact, when I picked these up to finish them today I was silently swearing to never knit a pair of socks with a heel like this again. I don’t have a pair of small enough scissors to really get in there so as to minimize the risk of accidentally cutting the wrong strand.

Not quite nutkins getting done 001

Then I got a crazy idea to use my seam ripper. And it seemed to work well:
Rippity Rip!
Just taking my time.. going slow..

Rip Rip Rip!

Phew!

All done!

All finished. Then it was smooth sailing. I did almost nick a strand near the corner when I first started but thankfully it has 10 plies so it should hold up well. If not I’ve got plenty of the yarn left to darn a hole. ;)

Now to start a new pair of socks and hope those don’t take 5 years!

Guess what?!

Episode 21 of BeanKnits and Spins is LIVE! Just a quick recap of what’s been going on since Episode 20 and some new info too! (A short video will play if you’re listening on-site.) It may take a day or so for the episode to show in Search in iTunes but if you subscribe to the feed you will be able to get today’s episode.

And, because I just remembered this, check out this neat way to join granny squares! Thank you, Theresa for sharing this! Unfortunately the squares I need to assemble are not traditional grannies, but I’ll manage, even if it means crocheting an additional row around them so I’d have something to join to. ;) Now, just to find some Caron Simply Soft in Black.

Just Doing It.

That is kind of how I feel about my latest craft projects. Other than baking for special occasions I’ve been contemplating practicing my baking a little more. I’ve always farked up whole wheat bread. It was always hard, and flat. Nothing I tried worked. But recently I read something about “vital wheat gluten”, which is supposed to help wheat breads rise better. I’ve yet to actually try it but hopefully sometime this weekend I’ll get around to it.

I did manage to make some banana bread, though:
Banana Banana Bread

from this recipe.

I’m thinking I should have added that 4th banana in there. Some of the reviews do indicate that extra banana would improve the moisture but I didn’t listen. Or perhaps the addition of baking powder may have something to do with it. In previous incarnations, with a different recipe the bread was always kind of flat and that one didn’t call for baking powder either, so I figured that was the problem. This loaf is somewhat taller but not by much(I’m starting to think other people are using a smaller pan than my 9×5′er, which could mean nothing I do will yield a taller result). Oh well, it’s still very good, even if a little on the dry side. Nothing a hot cup of coffee or tea or a glass of cold milk won’t fix.

In knitting I’m also slowly starting up. Oh I’ve knit the occasional hat or mittens or some other whimsy but one of the things I’ve been wanting to knit more of is sweaters for ME. Sadly, though, I’ve been quite reluctant to do so because of the four disasters in my knitting past: namely, the felting of my Cheesylove pullover, the shrinking of my beloved Central Park Hoodie by my MIL, and the fact that I ran seriously short of yarn for the handspun Heather Hoodie. Not to mention, the failure of kiddo’s Basic Black.

Eileen back

Enter Eileen. I just decided to jump in and do it. Of course the decision was facilitated by a sale at Michaels. ;) I went with a bold color that I love and so far the knitting is going ok. I was a little uneasy with the shifting charts; if you look at the back photo you’ll notice there is a center panel and two side panels. The side panel chart only has 6 rows but the center one has 8. The first repeat of the two charts started out with the same rows, only to have me start the side panel chart AGAIN before finishing the first repeat of the center panel. And there I was thinking I’d print the charts on the same sheet of paper and use one long strip of highlighter tape to track the rows. Sigh. Oh well. I guess I could still print them together since they’re small. But it hasn’t been a major hassle yet.

Now, while I did enhance my stash for this project I have been working from stash I already had.

Crochet Box

I had 3 balls of Lamb’s Pride Bulky laying around, seemingly forever, and decided now was the time. The other day I just started crocheting these rectangles, not even knowing what I’d do with them. I just needed to be doing something with my hands. My son came in the room and asked if I was making a box. I looked at the panels and just decided, yeah, I’m gonna make a box. And I did!

I’ve read that crochet is harder to felt than knitting and I’m seeing this may very well be true. I would have thought with the yarn being a single ply that it would felt lovely but, the crochet won out. You can still see some of the stitch definition. Also the finished item isn’t as sturdy as knit felt would be. There’s no way that box would stand up to the spindles, but this is even floppier than normal; everything is actually sitting in a hard plastic bucket the kids got a few Halloween’s ago. Eh, it works, right?

I hear Eileen calling so I’d better go see what she wants.

Revving Up

For a new year. There’s a lot I could say right now but I’ll hold off til the next post.

Just wanted to say Hi! And that there’s a new weblog challenge going on right now with WordPress. The challenges are to either post once a week or once a day. It’s Saturday and well, I’m not ready to put up a REAL post just yet, but I didn’t want to miss out on fullfilling this challenge, so here’s my post for the first week of 2011. :p

Hubris is the mother of last-minute sewing

Now that the Thanksgiving food coma has lifted I remembered to post this.

I opened my big fat mouth and wound up having to do something to keep from putting my foot in it. I got cute and told my cousin, who was hosting Thanksgiving dinner at her house that I would bring some Sweet Rolls for the meal. I’m a Jean E. Yuss. Because it’s a long trip(especially with transit running on a Sunday schedule), I decided I’d need to keep the rolls warm so I wouldn’t have them waiting for them to bake once I got there*. So crazy me decided to sew a quilted cake carrier tote which turned out ok, but nothing like what I envisioned.

Below is some fabrics I got at the Sav-A-Thon last year on clearance. I figured now was the time to use them.
Dairy of a Proctrasinating Crafter: Quilted Cake Carrier Wrap

I totally pulled the idea and the shaping out of my a$$ on this one. I thought about making a tutorial but decided against it when I realized I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. But I kept at it. And the result was this:

Dairy of a Proctrasinating Crafter: Quilted Cake Carrier Wrap

I actually finished it the morning of Thanksgiving, having started the evening before. Around midnight I got fed up and got me a drink of coquito, and promptly went to bed.
Yay Coquito!

Looking at the finished item I know now what I’d do different:
1)Make the bottom bigger and the side panel longer to go all the way around to fit so I wouldn’t need the zipper(though I do like that part of it.)
2) Really get an understanding of how to sew in elastic. I couldn’t get it to shrink down over the top as much as I’d have liked. Or,
3) I could have made the side panel taller so I could leave a few inches unquilted and fold that part over for a drawstring casing, eliminating the need to futz with the elastic in the first place. (aha, moment of genius, after it was all said and done)

Other than that, it was a fairly good experience taking my own idea and making something. The family thought it looked good despite the issues with the closure and that alone made it worth while.

* It ended up that when we were leaving she told us she was still cooking so it wouldn’t be like they were waiting for us to eat. Since I was running a bit behind(I farked up the recipe–You can’t always substitute shortening for butter, just so you know) I wound up just carting the rising dough with me instead of baking at home. The warmth provided by the quilted wrap helped them rise nice and big! Yay! Oh and I uh don’t have a pic. We ate ‘em. ;)

Cookie Quickie

The other day I did a fall cleaning reorganization of the kitchen cabinets and decided it was time to make cookies again.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Here be cookies! More precisely, Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies. I prefer Oatmeal Raisin, but since Boy Beanlet cannot eat raisins and the other Beanlets wanted Chocolate Chip, I compromised with this recipe.

It was the usual choco-chip recipe but with added slow-cook oats. The taste is not quite the combination of oatmeal-raisin and choco chip that I was hoping for, but the texture is interesting enough to make me want to bake these again. One thing I notice about these types of cookies though, is that they’re never as dark as commercial brand cookies. I’m guessing that has a lot do with all the processing involved in making them. If that’s the case, I’ll gladly take these don’t-look-done over those.

The kids, of course, can’t wait to get their little hands on them. That’s definitely a good sign. :)

Birthday, DIY-Style

DIY Cutting Sewing Table

I got back into sewing in 2007 and had various setups for cutting and sewing but after a while I just couldn’t stand the card tables anymore. The unwillingness to mess with the too-low, push-together-and-still-not-long-enough, too-narrow tables put a major damper in my desire to actually cut fabric and sew.

I’d long wanted to make my own table after a friend mentioned that I could make one with a hollow-core door. Too afraid to mess it up, I kept searching for a low-priced, big-enough table that I liked and found nothing. There was one table at Joanns that folded out into a 60″ by 36″ table but I didn’t want the gaps in the surface where it folded up. I wanted one smooth surface.

I thought again about making the table myself and since my birthday was coming up, I decided it was time to venture out into DIY-land to get what I really wanted. I’d planned on dinner and some bowling with the hubby but figured I’d rather spend the cash on something that would last me longer than one night of entertainment.

So for about two weeks I lived at Home Depot gathering what I’d need and this is the result:

DIY Cutting and Sewing Table/ Birthday Gift

a table so long I couldn’t get it all in the frame without a wide-angle lens. (Well that and the living room was a bit of a shambles which is why I didn’t just back up.) I had to stand on a step stool to get that first photo.

Of course the hubby thought I was crazy but I am so happy!! There was a minor glitch or 3 when the drill would get away from him and went through to the ‘top’ surface. I patched that up with some wood filler and called it a day, but I do plan to finish it to make the surface more water resistant.

Next time I’ll do things a little differently: like attaching the legs while they’re folded up(it’s a long story why I didn’t), and, if I’d had more time to plan it I’d have sprung for a solid door(diminishing the errant drill issue). But overall I think I did a good job. I can’t wait to put a finish on it and get it dry so I can really work with it. I need a winter coat and some new jeans!! Also I’ll have a surface higher than the floor to put my blocking board on for knits!! YAY!

The cake and dinner are gone, but the table remains. It was a very happy birthday for me.

I’ve been RAOK’d! and New Teapot!

Gifts and new Teapot!

The week was sorta dragging along until I got a RAOK(Random Act of Kindness) package from Nashe . She sent me the two knitting novels and some lush spinning fiber(Hello Yarn!), along with a cute little notecard. And it’s knitting themed too! I gotta find out where she got them from, I’d love to have some to send out to other crafties!! It’ll be a while before I can allow myself to play with the pretty fibers but I’m definitely looking forward to it! Crafting buddies are the best!! :D Been thinking about new knitting mysteries and this came right on time.

As I type this I’m sipping on some Adagio Rooibos Orange tea. I’d previously tasted rooibos and didn’t care for it at all. But this flavored blend is really nice; neither flavor overpowers the other. I’m thinking this, along with their Bengal Green Chai and Ti Kuan Yin are my new favorite teas!! And yes, that’s a new teapot. My first ceramic pot got sick and I had to put it down. It had fine cracks that I decided to ignore. Well, the cracks grew and got all gross inside so I had to chuck it in the trash. I miss that pretty pot and I’m glad pots like it are still being made. Maybe in a few years I’ll get another.

I had a second pot already to brew the teas because it has a built-in strainer, but the holes are a little too big and small bits of leaf were getting through. Once that first pot went kaput, I broke down and purchased the PersonaliTea pot, again from Adagio.(Sue me, their tea is reasonably priced and they deliver fast because they’re across the river!) This one is considerably smaller but! it has a mesh infuser basket that fits right in it! Makes much better tea. The smaller size is perfect for me since I drink tea alone. My only real peeve about this one is that the lid and infuser get very HOT and picking them up is tricky. Hmm.. Maybe some tiny tongs are in order.

In knitting, the Seasons Shawl is coming along nicely.

Seasons Shawl progress

That’s the third color I’m working on and soon I can add in the fourth. Why, yes, those ARE lifelines every 12 or so rows. I kid you not, if I don’t use them I fark it up lovely. I refuse to allow this project to wind up a mess because I didn’t take the time to put them in. So far, the only mistakes I’ve had to deal with were no more than half a row away. I plan to put some more rows on it this weekend if I don’t start seaming squares first. That’s right. A while back I mentioned sewing a baby blanket or two and now, everyone has popped. I admit my craft depression got the best of me and I never even started. But dangit, at least ONE baby quilt is getting made and gifted before this year is out! I must!

Regaining Balance

Change can be hard to adjust to. I got comfortable with my own server space and domain name, but maintaining both is just not possible right now. Maybe in the future I can go that route again. For the forseeable future, though, ladybean.net will still bring you here.

Slowly I’m regaining balance in my crafts. While my urge to sew is still generally stronger than that for knitting, I am currently working on a new shawl project and I’m rather happy about it.

KP Seasons Shawl: Fall/Winter

The Fall/Winter Seasons Shawl kit, from KnitPicks. I’m not too thrilled with the choice of transitioning from green to orange(say what??)but that’s what was in the kit. Strangely, online and in the catalog, the difference didn’t look so glaring. If I ever knit this again I won’t need the kit; I can just order whatever colors I think would look better. There’s also a Spring/Summer shawl with brighter colors but I wasn’t too keen on the pattern and I wasn’t sure if the included amounts of yarn would work for this one.

After a few false starts I was on my way and I’m enjoying the process. Every so many rows I’m putting in a life line; I don’t find them fun to deal with but it sure beats the tedious task of un-knitting stitch by stitch to get back to a mistake, especially in lace. I won’t need the shawl for a while yet, but I’d like to have it done all the same. Just have to take my time on it.

As for sewing, I haven’t started any new projects but I’ve definitely got some goodies in the pipeline.

I’ve been reading a very inspiring refashioning blog: New Dress A Day. This sewing blogger does amazing stuff with thrifted dresses. Some stay dresses and others become tops. In one entry she was able to get a jacket AND a cover-up out of one dress!! Granted the dress was REALLY big and she’s not, so… But wow, just very inspiring. I’ve done a little refashioning here and there but nothing on that scale. Along with regaining balance I need to work on my skill level and CONFIDENCE. I’m too afraid to try anything for fear of having wasted my time, materials and still not having learned anything.

Hopefully though, a shot at this pair of wrap pants will usher me down the road to sewing proficiency(one can only hope!) I got the idea from my ever-inspiring crafty friend Spinndiva.
Don’t you just love that fabric? :) I do!

Crafting Karma rears her head

That’s what I get.

Despite having a stack of WIPs in the UnFO pile, I thought I was gonna try and start a new project. WRONG.
Behold:

Inspiration

My latest knitting inspiration, the Fall/Winter Seasons Shawl, from Knitpicks. Sigh. I got the latest catalog in the mail a few weeks ago and couldn’t resist. Knowing I had a bunch of WIPs I hadn’t even touched in MONTHS. Shameful, I know. But order I did. After a brief wait, it arrived and all I wanted to do was dig in. And then it happened.

If you look closely you’ll notice the yarn is in hanks. Which means it will need winding before I can knit with it. And I CAN’T FIND MY GOT DAMN SWIFT AND BALLWINDER!! Sigh. I know I brought it with me during the move and I’ve certainly used it in the almost 2 years we’ve lived here. Well, Chez BeanKnit is about to get turned upside down because I MUST find them. For what it’s worth, I will need them when it’s time to dye more yarn to add to the Heather Hoodie I’ve been meaning to complete.

In sewing, Karma bit my rear again! I’ve also got some Un-FO’s in the fabric realm and well, it’s not nearly as bad with that. I’ve got much less undone projects in sewing but I learned a very important lesson in regards to Goodwill-ing. A few months ago I got a cute-but-odd shaped piece of fabric (pics at a later date) that I can turn into an apron. I kept meaning to get the other one(there were two but somehow I only bought one) to have more fabric in case I needed it, but I went back after too long and it was gone. Silly me, thinking no one else would want it. I’ve read things along the lines of, “If you see it there get it because when you go back it’ll be gone.”, and it really applied in this case. Oh well, I’m sure I’ve got some complementary fabric in that huge stash of mine to work with.

Lately though, it’s just been too hot to be in the living room which is where the machines are kept. One of these days I will get around to it. But DAMN I need my swift and winder!
