Back in Stride (NaBloPoMo day 11)

It’s been almost exactly a month since my last group photowalk. This afternoon, I met up with 5 other local photographers, who are excellent at what they do, and really friendly people to walk with. Were it not for achy feet and a need to run some errands I probably would have walked the length of Manhattan with them(assuming that’s what they did after we parted ways…).

It was intended to be a Fall foliage walk but after Hurricane Sandy came through, pretty much all the good leaves were blown off the trees. Any full trees left (standing, that is) were either still green or completely bare. I did get some nice shots of the scenery, but I think I did better upstate last month.

The Ramble( a mini-forest with winding paths) saw a lot of damage and we weren’t allowed to walk into it. I’ve walked through there many an afternoon and always found it enjoyable so of course we were quite bummed at the bad news. I was hoping they’d have cleared that by now, but as we walked by I heard buzz saws going, which meant they were still hard at work removing damaged trees. Oh well, Spring time.

The highlight of the afternoon, though, was spotting Pale Male, a popular Red-tailed Hawk that’s been in the news a number of years. I believe Pale Male is 21 and so far has had 8 mates. I thought they mated for life but I guess not. I didn’t see a female around so who knows if he’s flying solo now.  He is beautiful though:

I only wish my zoom could have gone closer. I’m at 270mm right here and I wouldn’t mind going to 400.

Shortly after this sighting, I hit the road and here I am writing this post. :) Now, to relax with a book. I wonder which one I should start with?

I won! (NaBloPoMo Day 8)

Wow! I spent the first half of the day contemplating my topic for today’s post when I went email-checking and found a Congratulations!  I won the local photowalk contest!

Back on October 13th, was the Scott Kelby Annual World Wide Photowalk and I participated with a group of local photogs under the leadership of Mark Garbowski. All participants were allowed to post a photo to their local photowalk page to enter the photowalk contest. Well, I entered mine in, thinking, “eh, what are the odds?”

Little did I know that I’d win the local contest. I’d sort of forgotten there was one, really. And, to be fair I was apparently the only person to enter a photo(why??). But,

I. WON!  a free copy of the e-book version of Scott’s The Lightroom 4 Book for Digital Photographers”. I had been wanting to get this one but chickened out. Good thing I waited huh? :)

Here’s the shot that won:

I can’t wait to dig into that book!

NY Sheep and Wool Festival… or, Rhinebeck 2012!

After a 4-year absence I got the chance to hit the NY Sheep and Wool Festival, aka Rhinebeck, again. The first time I went, I only spent the Saturday there, but after spending the weekend in 2008, I knew I’d have to continue making a serious vacation of this experience.  And, so it was a weekend this time too.

The highlights are as follows:

People:

LetteKnits, HeiressKnits, CiciCarry

(L-R)LetteKnits, HeiressKnits, and CiciCarry!!

G+ KnitChat finally meets.

My G+ KnitChat crew, clockwise(VivianneKnits, me, Monetb56, PDXLaceknitter and TamiKnits– we all rode up together except for Viv who freaking LIVES up there! I am Gel- Us!
Food:

Maple Cotton Candy!

Maple Cotton Candy, ohhh so good. I was holding out for these delectable soaps I found in ’08 from a vendor with no online presence, but alas, he was nowhere to be found.

and Fiber goods:

Lots of decorated wheels. I keep saying I’ll do up mine, but I get lazy and scared of messing up so..

And don’t forget the sheep!

Untitled

Cheviot girlie!

And just think, I did this times two! We stayed all day on Saturday til we just about got kicked out, but left early on Sunday to avoid the crazy that is trying to get out of the parking lot all. at. once. Live and learn.

So much to see and do and tried to take photos of it all. Wallet in one hand, camera in the other and a ton of fun was had.

I will have to make a separate post of the actual haul, as I’m still trying to recover(and make room!)

If you’re heading out to SAFF this coming weekend, I hope your experience is just as, if not more fun!

Updates

My mind’s still a bit frazzled from the mini-earthquake/Hurricane Irene occurrences of the last week so I’m just going to do an update post, hold the humor.

Sewing:

Instead of making another sleep mask I decided to try my luck at making a camera strap cover.

Camera strap cover!

Nice and simple. In hindsight I probably should have padded it and spent the time to press the seams open so you don’t get that divot along the seamlines. All in all, it was a quick sew and I’m looking forward to making more strap covers with padding.

Knitting:

I’m almost done with one of the fronts for Eileen, but I got sidetracked by some bus knitting. I’d made a few trips around town last week and needed something portable to work on. I still haven’t memorized the chart for Eileen so I took some sock yarn and cast on. In just a few days I’ve already passed the heel on the one I started. I’ll probably go back to Eileen before I cast on the mate.

Cooking:

First Carrot Cake

I made carrot cake! Yay! Well, maybe. It was fun to make and the cream cheese icing was easy and delicious but the cake itself, well. It was OK, but not as moist as I’d have liked. I might have over-baked it because with a cup of oil and 4! eggs, it shouldn’t have been so dry. Oh well. The Beanlets like it so that’s all that matters, right? ;)

There was also a first attempt at making my own corn tortilla chips:

Homemade Tortilla chips and Salsa

Those didn’t go over well at all. I don’t know where I went wrong, so I just gave up and bought a bag from the store. The salsa, though? Awesome! It was originally supposed to be tomato sauce and I jumbled up the processing steps and it came out too chunky to be ‘sauce’. I am now planning to try and make this mistake again on purpose to get more salsa. It’s a hit!

Here’s what I remember doing:
I blanched 6lbs of plum and regular tomatoes to get the skins off
Chopped and boiled them down for about 20 minutes, then added a large white onion and large green pepper, both chopped up into about 3/4inch pieces.

Boiled that down about 10 min more to soften the pepper and onion, and added about a teaspoon of seasoning salt.

Then, in batches I pureed the mixture to what was a salsa-y texture. I stopped at that texture because the mixture was hot and somehow spilling out of the food processor. That’s when I just said “F it!” and jarred it all up and did the heat seal thing.

I SHOULD have pureed the tomatoes alone to get the sauce texture I was aiming for. I actually followed a recipe for that which is probably why I got it right the first time. Oh well, learn something every day!

Photography:

I’m currently working on putting my current photography themed posts and any future posts onto a separate blog. Stay tuned for the launch! :)

Whoops! or, Crash and Burn

That’s basically how things have been going with the spinning lately. I’ve missed a few days in the TdF. But apparently I missed more than that. I somehow mislaid a bit of the fiber I was spinning and thought I was done with it. And I also seem to have forgotten how to Navajo ply.

I think that’s why I put off finishing that little bit that remained. Because I knew I couldn’t remember how to chain ply. And I also had forgotten that singles which are going to be chain plied need to be tightly spun. Every attempt I made at getting into a groove failed because the singles would unravel and drift apart. Sigh. Add to that the fact my lazy kate is untensioned and it’s a recipe for disaster. I have decided I will have to add the extra step of winding that singles off into a center-pull ball so I can Andean(2-ply) it instead. :(

Do I make up the gaps by spinning through the second rest day? Or do I continue with the socks I’ve been working on. There are some changes with them too.

Socks on the loop

I started out with the Java socks pattern but that wasn’t working out. With this alpaca yarn, you can’t really see the stitch pattern all that well, so I’ll just keep on with the 2×1 ribbing. I’m going to run out of this yarn before I get to the toes, so I’ll be using some other yarn to finish. They’ll probably spend all their time not being seen(except in an FO photo) so I’m not really worried about them being perfect. But the effort involved in making them according to the pattern would be totally wasted if you can’t even see it.

Due to my epic failure in spinning this evening, there are no fiber photos. So I’ll leave you with the Lower Manhattan Skyline, as seen today from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

Visit From a Little Friend (A Special Post)

Back in June, an internet friend of several years had her kids make Flat Stanley dolls and sent one of them up here to visit with the BeanKnit family. (All pictures click through to enlarge.)

Flat, waiting for BBQ

This is Flat. She got to go almost everywhere we went while she stayed with us. This photo is from a friend’s son’s baptism. She was just relaxing in the backyard waiting for lunch. ;)

But first, the ceremony. I briefly contemplated making a paper dress for her to wear but I really don’t do well with stuff like that so I left it alone. Some of the other kids there weren’t all fancy, so she didn’t feel left out at all.

Flat, ready to pray
We also took Flat to Coney Island Beach to enjoy some sun and sand. Here she is sharing lunch with Biggest Beanlet.

Day 9--Someone you love

We had so much fun at the Beach we went back again! Littlest and Boy Beanlets were going around helping other kids bury themselves in the sand. Looks like Flat wanted in the fun too!

One day when the Beanlets were in school, Mr. BeanKnit and I went out to IHOP for a breakfast date and Flat got to come along.

Hey! That’s my coffee!

IMG_5778

Actually it was rather warm that morning so I asked the waitress for a glass of ice and made it iced coffee. I told Flat she could sip the ‘corner’ left in the cup. Hee.

There were lots of other places Flat got to go but unfortunately I didn’t get to take any other photos. I will be sending her owner a special map, detailing all the places Flat got to visit while she was here! Hopefully her mom will snap a photo, and with her permission, I’ll post it in a future blog post.

A big Thank You to the Montgomery family for sharing Flat with us. I almost didn’t want to send her back. Hmm. Maybe I should have the Beanlets make one and send it your way!

Next up, Back to Knitting, a little spinning craziness, and more!
